Learn to code with Kids Can Code! Earn your three Coding for Good badges writing JavaScript code using the VidCode platform. Girls should bring their own laptops to learn how to write and manipulate the text-based coding language JavaScript.

Girls will complete three code projects:

  • Badge 1 Coding Basics: Code a portrait using JavaScript for Seniors or Create a Video Meme using JavaScript on Vidcode for Ambassadors. What Girls Learn: Seniors - JavaScript is made up of objects that have properties and methods, and functions that perform different tasks. Ambassadors - JavaScript has functions that do things, and can take arguments that make the functions more specific.
  • Badge 2 Digital Game Design: Finish a game using JavaScript on Vidcode for Seniors or Create an Avatar using JavaScript on Vidcode for Ambassadors! What Girls Learn: Seniors - Objects can affect one another. You can detect collisions in video games by using if statements! Ambassadors - Avatars and graphics are important to games. You're going to use functions to display graphics, and use arguments to control how they display.
  • Badge 3 App Development: Complete an app using JavaScript and maps for Seniors or Complete a data tracking app using JavaScript on Vidcode for Ambassadors. What Girls Learn: Seniors - Data visualization can help you understand and change your community. Ambassadors - Learn about objects to store and display data. Data visualization can help people to change their habits.

Girls will learn how to code arrays to store and display data before they complete a prototype for a personal data app. Walk away with three completed projects to share your “Code for Good!”
